POST-SURGERY
At Illawarra Animal Hospital, we include post-surgery rehabilitation programs in our orthopaedic surgery solutions. Just like after human surgery, animals recover quicker and ultimately have better functional outcomes with less discomfort when rehabilitation programs are well-designed and executed immediately following surgery.
Our post-surgery rehabilitation treatment protocols are designed for pets who have suffered injuries affecting their muscles, bones, ligaments or tendons and will get your pet on the road to recovery faster.
Some of the surgeries which we regularly do and support with post-surgery rehabilitation programs are:
TPLO for Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tears
Fracture repair
Dislocated knee caps – Luxating Patella
Elbow Dysplasia
Femoral Head Ostectomies
Other techniques for Cruciate Ligament Rupture – TTA, DeAngelis, CBLO
Ligament & tendon tears

Much of the hard work is done by our rehabilitation team of veterinarians and nurses. They utilise proven best-practice treatment protocols and work closely with our in-house surgery team to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet. Techniques they use to achieve this include:
Laser therapy
Hydrotherapy in our underwater treadmill
Massage
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
Heat and ice therapy
Exercise plans
Sports conditioning
Lots of Pats, Pamper and Treats! Our rehab team are undoubtedly the most loved staff by our patients!
These techniques are combined to form the most treatment plan for each animal – to reduce post-surgery pain, inflammation and healing time whilst also maximising strength and function in recovery.
Post-surgery rehabilitation can be fun too! The traditional veterinary approach to post surgery care has centred on confinement and no exercise for months, resulting in long periods of boredom for the recovering patient. This can manifest as behavioural problems. By providing our animals with appropriate, structured exercise plans we stimulate their minds (as well as their bodies), thereby improving their response to confinement while they recover.
